5 Guide to make easier conversation with difficult people!
It’s double trouble to break the ice and that to with a difficult person. Who is a difficult person? Anyone who has a different background, different values and a different personality would be a difficult person for you. How would you make conversation with a person with whom your frequency does not match? Here are a few tips.
- Try to bridge the gap: Be observant and try to figure out some similarities which you both might have. It might be as small as having the same middle name or the same car. Having things in common will definitely strike a chord of acceptance. If you keep debating or having altercations regarding your differences then you would just end up building walls instead of bridges.
- Laughter is the best medicine: If Munna bhai’s ‘Jaadu ki jhaapi’ and his constant effort to make everyone laugh help a paralytic person leave his chair, why won’t it help you communicate with a difficult person. You just need to find out the type of humor which would do the trick. Will that person laugh on PJ’s? Do you think that this person will laugh when you tell an anecdote? Does that person like intellectual jokes? Always have different genres of jokes up your sleeve so that you can work with different kinds of people.
- Share a meal: It’s a regular practice in the cooperate sector to have important meetings along with lunch or dinner. Why do you think that is? Because it’s always easier to talk to the other person in an informal and a more relaxed atmosphere than in a formal or intense situation. Similarly it would be much easier to communicate with a difficult person over a cup a coffee or a meal than otherwise. Sharing a meal would definitely help the difficult person share his life with you too.
- Be patient: Being tough with an already difficult person would never let you talk to him. If you want to get through to a difficult person then you will have to lead the conversation. You will have to be more poised and ignore any harsh remarks he makes.
- Be sincere: Being truthful is the key to success for any conversation, be it with a normal guy or a difficult one. The last thing you want from a difficult person is being branded as a liar. If people think that you are a liar then they will avoid you. The difficult person will become even more difficult. Always be sincere and do not lie.
