Acidity: A small name to big problems!

Acidity which is supposed to be a past-middle age problem is now a common headache for everyone. Either young or old, acidity can trouble most of the people due to eating habits and stress.

It looks very simple at start and people take it lightly but what consequences it can result are far behind our expectations. You can never think how problematic acidity can be. It makes the victim unable to concentrate at work.

Sunil Kumar, a sales manager from Mumbai was losing his weight gradually and started vomiting blood before he could catch the reason of acidity behind these serious consequences.

Acidity starts with no serious problem. Initially it can trouble you with only an occasional headache, nausea, a little weakness or stomach aches. Later it can rise to severe headache, vomiting, rapid weight loss and weakness. It starts affecting your daily work and can make you idle.

Irregular eating patterns and anxiety are the main cause of the acidity. Oily and fried food regularly can cause acidity. Tensions of family and heavy workload add the problem and increase the chances of acidity.

Avinash sibbal, 25 a software engineer in an IT firm is also a victim of acidity who spends 12-14 hours in front of computer and eat junk food preferably. Admitting his wrong eating habits and sometimes overeating he said that “Acidity normally hits you at night, with excess gas formation in the tummy.”

There are many other youngsters who follow irregular eating habits and remain in tension of heavy workloads resulting into acidity. Long gaps between meals, strain and stress increases the risk of acidity which further give rise to many other problems. Acidity is responsible for symptoms like dyspepsia, heartburn and even the formation of ulcers.

Dr Deepa Bhise, a practicing physician in Pune explains, “The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. This acid helps in breaking down the food during digestion. When there is excess production of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach, it results in the condition known as acidity.”

“Acidity tends to have a much higher incidence in highly emotional and nervous individuals,” she adds.

Nausea and a splitting headache can be the symptoms in one case while there can a heartburn and severe ache in the upper abdomen like that in Avinash’s case. There may be no pain in some cases, just a feeling of indigestion or nausea. There is no urge to eat and even smells of eatables can be nausea tic for some.

“The most common symptom is dyspepsia, a burning or aching pain in the upper abdomen. Heartburn is characterized by a deeply placed, burning pain in the chest and it occurs after meals.” Said Dr Manasi Joshi, who runs Anandi Clinic in Pune.

Now what should be done to cure from this small looking big problem? First try to get into the cause of acidity.

Doctors also first try and identify the causative factors of the victim. “We first check the history of family members with ulcers and advice the patient to stop consumption of alcohol and smoking,” says Dr Joshi.

Stress assessments and analyses can also be very useful in determining the cause of the condition. Dr Joshi advices those involved in high-stress jobs to take up meditation or a hobby and take breaks from the office. “Though it’s easier said than done, I tell my patients to relax and pretend nothing is wrong with them,” he adds.

Dr Bhise advises, “Eat only when hungry, because digestive juices are released in the stomach only when one is hungry. Otherwise, undigested food in the stomach leads to fermentation.”

A healthy and controlled diet must be strictly followed. Avoid long gaps between meals. Avoid spicy, salty and acidic foods. Avoid junk food and lots of tea/coffee. Smoking and drinking should be strictly prohibited. Avoid any stress or tension. Avoid irregular sleeping patterns. Sleep at time and wake up early.

Things which should be taken in acidity include Bitter gourd at the top. is an excellent vehicle to dispel acidity. Include its sabzi, raita or juice in your diet regularly. Coconut water, cucumber juice and lime juice are good for health. Drink plenty of water. Prefer yoghurt and fresh buttermilk in your meals.

If the tips are followed and things mentioned above are taken care, you can keep yourself free from acidity.
