iPhone launched in India!
The much awaited iPhone was finally launched in India at midnight on August 21 in a function organized in Delhi by Airtel and Vodafone. The range of these touch screen iPhone starts from Rs 31,000 which has an 8GB memory while the other costs Rs 36,000 with double the memory that is 16 GB.
The iconic 3G-enabled iPhone was launched in six cities Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkatta, Chennai and Hyderabad. It will be available in 65 more cities from today, August 22 onwards.
Tech savvy people are much interested in iPhones and eagerly waiting for that. Vodafone, which opened bookings for the phones in July, have already received booking requests of over 10,000 phones. Industry experts say bookings and pre-launch interest suggest that they would be able to sell over 100,000
Sanjay Kapoor, President of Mobile Services at Bharti Airtel, remarked, “iPhone has been the iconic technology revelation of this year. Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector. Introducing iPhone 3G to India further underscores our commitment to enrich the communication experience of all Airtel users. Airtel is offering data of 5MB free, M-Check and Airtel Live experience.”
However, there is a huge difference between the domestic price and the US price. The handset is available for $199 (Rs 8,358) in the US, plus $99 (Rs 4,158) as an annual contract with the telecom company since the handsets is linked to the service provider. The large subsidies that service providers are willing to provide to woo customers is the reason behind the low price which is missing in India.
The 3G iPhone provides faster downloads and direct connections to YouTube with many other features.
Meanwhile, a couple of days back Nokia launched N96 with added features to compete the iPhones. The Nokia N96 was launched on August 19 in Delhi. The N96 has a mobile TV and video calls feature using the front side VGA cam. The N96 comes with a 5 mega pixel camera and the iPhone sports a 2 mega pixel camera. Time will tell who will win the race.
