What are we getting from the fight between Google and Microsoft!
Google and Microsoft, are undoubtedly the two most gigantic and powerful names in the IT industry. In the past few months, though the two seem to have challenged themselves and butted heads against each other for supremacy in the digital world. Whether its operating systems, search engines, documents, maps, mobiles or communication, both are in it neck deep while competing with each other.
Google seemed to have launched a direct attack on Microsoft; first it launched Chrome browser against Internet Explorer and soon came its Android mobile operating system against Microsoft’s Windows mobile, and now the Chrome OS. From the looks of it, it seems like a full-fledged tech battle between the mammoth Microsoft and the giant Google. However, it is not a death match, but merely a fight to be the King of Technology.
The question that remains is – who is winning the war? – Is there a clear winner? The answer to them is probably not predictable in the near future, as both of them with their billion dollars deep pockets are unlikely to take any severe action against each other.
With both the companies making headlines it comes down to a straight up assessment of where their competition stands.
When it comes to browsing servers, unsurprisingly, Microsoft retained about 65% of the share of the market with Internet Explorer. This dominance continues despite the launch of others with advanced features and capabilities mostly due to the fact that it comes by default with the OS. Chrome, on the other hand has a mere 2% market share in this area, even though it’s revolutionary, sleek and renders greater safety and it is much faster compared to other browsers.
The word search is synonym to Google and in the key area of search engines; Google remains light years ahead of Microsoft. Though Microsoft recently launched Bing as a drastic attempt to compete with Google, it doesn’t seem to have affected Google’s reign. Microsoft even made a failed attempted to buy Yahoo recently for the very purpose.
Microsoft has been making OSs since 1979 and happens to be the leading manufacturer. Its advantages are extreme, as millions of users all over the world know nothing else and like nothing else but Windows. It also dominates the business world where every application is done on Microsoft Office. In contrast Google launched its first ever OS in 2007, the Android OS, for small devices. Though it’s been growing in features its user rate remains small.
Another key area of competition for both happens to be Communication, Email and IM. Google is renowned for Gmail and Gtalk, however, Hotmail and live messenger continues to be bigger. Microsoft also popularizes Outlook software, giving it an edge over the other. But with Google’s upcoming Wave and Voice communication platforms there is yet much to be seen in this area.
The industry watchers believe it to be a huge threat as the companies move into newer territory for the sake of competition. But contrary to what may be believed, this epic fight has immense benefits.
Google’s arrival as a competitor for Microsoft has stirred new action in the industry. Both have taken upon the race for innovation and the benefits are for us to enjoy.
